UNC Asheville’s juried international exhibition, Drawing Discourse, will open with a special event on January 16, 2026 featuring Juror, Katharine Stout. The exhibition features 57 works of contemporary drawing selected from 1241 submissions by 377 artists in 5 countries.
Ms. Stout will provide a Zoom lecture from 5-6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, 2026. This lecture will also be broadcast live in Owen Hall 202 on the UNC Asheville campus. Katharine Stout is a freelance arts consultant, currently curating a solo exhibition of Rose Wylie’s works for the Royal Academy of Arts, opening in February 2026. She has worked in various public arts organisations, including as Director of Focal Point Gallery in Southend-on-Sea (2019 to ‘24); as Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2017 to ‘19), and as ICA’s Head of Programme (2013 to ‘17). Prior to the ICA, Stout was Curator of Contemporary Art at Tate Britain (1999 to 2013), curating contemporary exhibitions, the Art Now series, the Turner Prize, and collections displays and acquisitions. In 2001, she co-founded the Drawing Room with Mary Doyle and Kate Macfarlane, where she is Associate Director, and serves on the Board of Tannery Arts, which provides artists’ studio space. Stout curated the inaugural contemporary art commissions at the National Maritime Museum as part of a major refurbishment completed in 1999. She has written numerous texts on contemporary ar,t and her book, Contemporary Drawing: 1960s to Now, was published by Tate in 2014.
