UNC Asheville’s juried national exhibition, Drawing Discourse, will open with special events on Jan. 13 featuring renowned artist; Jerome Witkin. The exhibition features 41 works of contemporary drawing selected from among almost 423 submissions by 137 artists representing 34 states.
Juror, Jerome Witkin is an American figurative artist whose works often deal with political & cultural themes. Witkin’s work has earned him numerous awards such as: The Pultizer Traveling Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship and the Cooper Union Lifetime Achievement Award. Witkin’s works are found in the permanent collection of prominent museums around the world that include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Witkin has been a distinguished Professor at The Syracuse University College of Visual & Performing Arts since 1971.
Witkin, will provide an opening lecture about his practice from 5-6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 in the Humanities Lecture Hall. Witkin’s talk will be followed by a reception in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery from 6–8 p.m.
