The Death of Castor and Conflict of Generations (Titanomachy), oil on canvas
Artist Statement
Mythic Images is a series of drawings and oil paintings in which I reimagine friends and acquaintances as mythic gods and goddesses from ancient Greece and Egypt. Through this process, personal and ephemeral figures are linked with collective and enduring ones as a means of exploring our culture’s ancient roots, and seeing how they can be revitalized for a contemporary audience. The series imitates an eclectic array of historic mythological painting styles, culminating in a number of works that place gods and goddesses within contemporary scenarios. The results are hybrid images that pair ancient deities with recent natural disasters; or explore a myth about Venus and feminine beauty through the lens of women's empowerment. The works in this exhibit invite the viewer to question the dividing lines between mythology and reality, history and the present.
