Artist Statement

This body of work aims to draw connections between expressions of the human body through dance and ancient Greek art to discover how those connections can be translated into contemporary ceramic vessels. The whimsical vessels serve to add beauty, comfort, and playfulness to people’s lives. Utilizing classical amphora shapes and sgraffito carvings, the wheel thrown porcelain vessels draw inspiration from the aesthetics of classical ballet to emphasize elegance, femininity, and movement. The pieces created are a unique convergence of styles and influences including the ancient Greek geometric period, Greek classicism, Art Nouveau, Victorian lighting styles, and sleek contemporary lines. Connections between dance and ancient Greek art include elegance, attention to detail, craftsmanship, fantastical storytelling and drama, the illusion of weightless forms, and curved and elongated lines. This work aims to synthesize the experience of attending a ballet and observing an ancient masterpiece into objects that bring those experiences into one’s everyday life.
