Artist Statement
The aim of this body of work is to explore the expectations of society and how they relate to the concept of deviance, which is defined as, “any behavior that differs significantly from what is considered appropriate or typical for a social group,” by the APA. Through the juxtaposition of everyday objects, such as candy, and macabre imagery relating to body modification, skeletons, and injury, this body of work creates a dialogue about normalizing unique behaviors that are considered deviant. Color is used to push the conversation in one direction or the other and blur the lines that separate the two, creating either a darker, more solemn feeling or vivid, lively energy. These works are both inviting and conflicting, depending on the viewer’s perspective on what is considered deviant.
