Artist Statement
My current body of work, entitled “Traversing Voids”, explores the healing nature of artistic expression through the creation of mixed media sculpture- utilizing wood, acrylic paint, fibers and metals. “Traversing Voids” is heavily influenced by several artistic movements including the op art movement, pop art, color field painting, and Memphis design; and is composed of vibrantly colored pieces that are both wall-mounted and displayed on pedestals. The foundation of this work is rooted in intuitive self-expression through the use of shape, line, color, symbol, and beyond. It is also driven by the voice of a suppressed inner-child, longing to be seen and heard. The process of helping one’s self heal via artistic creation is examined through the lens of an artist currently living through the self-healing process, while being supported by concepts such as Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, art therapy, and color psychology.
