Artist Statement

Food is something we have to interact with constantly, and while it is generally displayed in a positive light, many people have difficult relationships with it due to associated social standards and their own habits formed from difficult experiences. My work explores my own conflicting relationships with food and how it affects my self image by displaying my personal connection as well as those of the people close to me. I make use of techniques such as clay throwing, hand building, underglazing, and sculpting, and I utilize visual expressions of common phrases and metaphors to break down the concepts in some pieces. Inspired by pop art and artists like Sally Hewitt and Peter Anton, my work is a collective of representational sculptures and installations using common imagery to break down some of our difficult experiences with food, body, and the emotions they evoke. This body of work exposes my constant battle between my love of cooking and my poor self image with food being at the center on both sides. My negative outlook on my own appearance has drastically changed the way I look at food and shifted my body of work to focus on the more harmful aspects of certain dietary habits.
