Artist Statement
Humans have a direct relationship with the natural world—we stand apart from it, observing, and yet we are also part of it, tiny components of a greater whole. In my artwork, I use nature’s palette as inspiration to create my own vision of nature using clay. I am not interested in recreating nature as I see it, but rather responding to it, creating new shapes from familiar patterns. I analyze structures in nature that I consider beautiful, from the microscopic to the visible. I then break these forms down into their smallest components to try to understand where the essence and beauty comes from, and then mold these shapes out of clay in order to build my own sculptures. From hundreds of flower petals to thousands of dots, these small clay elements are used to create the sculptures’ forms, repetitively and painstakingly assembled to remind viewers of the complexity and patternicity of nature. I chose clay as my medium because its tactile, tangible qualities make for limitless possibilities and the direct sense that I am forming my own emotions into my work. My creations are stylized, flowing, and ornate, imbued with layers of patterns and elements of abstraction.
