Artist Statement
A garden is a planned space set aside for display that connects humans with the natural world. It is an area cultivated and tended by human intention that serves as a personal sanctuary for reflection and contemplation. It serves as an enclosure that exhibits the cycles of life and growth, which parallel one's self-development and tribulations.
Garden of Ewe is a body of work that expresses human realities and emotions through the embodiment of lambs. Lambs serve as the vessel that visually narrates the vulnerability and growth present in the human experience. Their innocent and peaceful nature links to the rhythm of new beginnings and growth. Sheep rely on a flock for support and harmony. A singular sheep reflects individual solitude and self reflection. Lambs convey quiet strength with their embrace of vulnerability through gentle guidance and the wisdom of stillness, softness, and grace.
The metaphorical relationship between lamb, dog, and wolf correlates to the tribulations of learning to be assertive, claiming external support, and the ability to grow through adversity. Livestock guardian dogs create a link of trust and dependability as they oversee the lambs. Wolves are the natural predators of lambs. They stalk and seek to consume lambs, disrupting their sense of calm and stability. The chaotic and harmful nature of wolves is regulated by the guard dogs' strength and trusted guidance. With the aid of the guard dog, the vulnerability of lambs is protected as they develop a sense of safety while navigating the world around them.
