Artist Statement
Since the beginning of human history, Homo sapiens has communicated through stories. Oral traditions became legends which became religion. Through the lens of religion, human beings made sense of the fleshy, bloody world in which they dwelt. Animals often served as the canvas by which religion, lore, and tradition were drawn. Today, the power of the animal form in narrative and visual context elicits an emotional response and kinship. Mythology and religion have enabled humans to interpret harsh biological realities through certain narratives. In times of grief or disaster, human beings are forced to confront these narratives and ask what value they contain. Religion holds beauty for some and pain for many; this body of work seeks to expose this strange dichotomy. Through the dissection and exploration of familial beliefs and traditions, this work unravels the symbolism that birds and other creatures common to religious tradition embody. Through the reinvention of creaturely lore, the viewer is asked to look within and confront their own mythos.
