Artist Statement

This work is a celebration and a reclamation of the human body. It serves to critique and satirize the ideological construct of beauty as it pertains to femininity, while visually communicating feelings of discomfort and dysmorphia in the body.

At the center of this exhibition is a curiosity about what can live in the space between seduction and repulsion. The work addresses this dichotomy while exploring concepts of vanity, adornment, and the relationship between the body and the vessel. Mimicking the manner in which vessels are embellished with ornamentation, these pieces are inspired by the things like bruises, stretch marks, scars, freckles, pimples, wrinkles, and hair that turn bodies into storytelling vessels. Ultimately, Sweet Meat creates a space that entices the viewer to give a loving embrace to both the alluring and the grotesque.
