Artist Statement

Jacquelyn Sublett creates large ceramic vessels inspired by ancient Greek and Roman amphorae and echea, which were once used to resonate sound in amphitheaters and churches. Her work explores the relationship between vessel shape, size and sound, while drawing on historical and natural influences.

Jacquelyn builds her forms on the wheel, often stacking sections of 10–20 pounds of clay and finishing them with handles and surface details unique to her style. Raku firing is central to her process: reflective glazes emulate the shimmer of bronze echea, while natural materials such as horsehair, feathers, and sugar leave distinctive markings that honor nature. The unpredictability of Raku—its fractures, sheen, and aged appearance—makes each vessel unique.

Through this blending of science, history, and art, she aims for her vessels to embody both beauty and function. Creating them gives her purpose and allows her to contribute meaningfully to the world.
