Artist Statement
This body of work stems from the artist’s interactions with an inherent mourning of the passage of time. Drawings utilize imagery of family, home, and memories and are juxtaposed with the freedom and resilience of natural phenomena, with a focus on birds, roots, and branches. The works offer an exploration into how humans feel constrained in the ever-changing cycle of life, while nature embraces and adapts to it. Graphite as a medium visualizes the subject matter with some aspects sharp and others hazy, allowing these works to grasp the longing of memory. In order to find comfort and reconciliation in the yearning for times past, the works represent a fleeting moment in an attempt to hold it still. Pieces ask both the creator and viewer to sit with the grief and loss that these depictions encapsulate. By creating these drawings, I ask the viewer and myself: “Is it possible to find release from and comfort in the grief of memories by working through these moments. Can drawing create a dialogue surrounding the dichotomy of reception to change in nature and nostalgia in the human condition?”
