Artist Statement

Generations of women have been shattered by the trauma that comes with living as a woman in a patriarchal society but are villainized and misunderstood in their moments of reactance to it. Haunted by what they have experienced and beaten into passivity, there is no room to process and acknowledge what they have gone through. Their emotions are left to rot them from the inside out and their cries of agony are left ridiculed and unrecognized.

Through the lens of a female artist, this body of work seeks to create a safe space that represents personal and universal moments of women’s ‘madness’, considering the period after women experience trauma—painting women during still moments in isolated atmospheres to represent the periods of reactance, breakdown, living with the effects, grappling with irrational thoughts, and attempts at recovery. Using the doll as a recurring symbol to reflect the degradation, objectification, and perceived hollowness that women often face.

A Woman with a Quivering Heart is an exhibition dedicated to women, to acknowledge their hardships and allow them to exist authentically as they are.
