Artist Statement
Transitioning from girlhood to womanhood within a patriarchal society can be a profoundly scary and isolating journey. As the older sister to two girls—one navigating adolescence and the other still in the innocence of early youth—they serve as reflective mirrors, forcing me to confront and process my childhood wounds.
This collection of work is focused around portraiture which captures the tender essence of femme individuals, surrounded by adorable animals and cherished personal belongings. The overarching theme of cuteness, typically dismissed as trivial or superficial, serves as a poignant metaphor for the societal diminishment and mockery of femininity and feminine presenting people.
Through the process of painting these various femme people, I have found myself deeply moved and understood, as their vulnerability and complex relationships with femininity resonate with my own. Ultimately, this body of work aims to celebrate and honor safe spaces, sisterhood, and center the female gaze and experience.
