Artist Statement

Ever since I was little, I have always sought comfort in the form of worlds and characters that I create. This tool has stuck with me as I’ve grown older and has been incredibly useful at explaining ideas and feelings that are difficult for me to describe verbally. Such as in this body of work, where I have created characters, a narrative, and a world as a means to criticize a contemporary issue that chews away at both myself and others.

This narrative series is built around the ideas of dangerous escapism as a result of restlessness in the mundane, and suppression of personality under capitalism. These works showcase this story through an otherworldly lens using cosmic, biblical, and hellish imagery with symbols of entropy.

Elements within this body of work criticize the socio-economic state Americans are living in today; challenging expectations of the average U.S. citizen. The character, Alan, takes on a Christ-like role, seeking redemption from his corporate monotonous life. He finds himself in a nightmarish world after venturing into the most destructive stellar body in the universe. A black hole. It is physically impossible to know what lies inside of a black hole without being destroyed in the process.

This series primarily consists of digital drawings, printed onto high quality watercolor paper. The methods by which I create my work reference techniques of old, like starting with a grisaille and applying color in later stages. Use of digital medium creates a sense of irony between subject matter, concept, and artwork as technological advancement is one of the main driving factors in an increasingly capitalist society.
