Artist Statement

A home is much more than a physical space; it is a place filled with feelings, memories, and pieces of identity. Forming connections to spaces is a part of human nature, stemming from the same psychological need for love and a sense of belonging that leads us to establish meaningful social connections. The concept of ‘home’ is created through the emotional connection we develop within a space, where memories accumulate, and feelings of comfort, security, and belonging are cultivated. The place where you were raised sets the stage for foundational childhood memories and experiences that permeate even beyond the physical space and remain with you for life. In this body of work, acrylic paint and other mixed media materials serve as tools for exploring and illustrating themes of childhood, nostalgia, and the sentimentality we associate with the place we were raised in. My work combines both specific personal moments and broader, generalized scenes that embody my own reflections and experiences of growing up in rural North Carolina, and aims to capture and preserve the feelings of comfort, belonging, and reminiscence created in the place I call home. In doing so, this body of work invites the viewer to reflect upon their own memories and emotions surrounding the places that they have called their own.
