Artist Statment
My work centers on the fragile balance between safety and vulnerability, particularly within adolescence. Growing up, safety is something we actively seek. Yet, the spaces teenagers find refuge in often become charged with exposure. Limited mobility and the desire to hide from figures of authority compress experience, pushing private emotion into borrowed or temporary shelters. Through painting and spatial installation, I return to these domestic and suburban environments as mutable interiors where protection and risk coexist. Informed by ideas of the optics of power, I consider how visibility operates as a form of control, how the act of being seen structures behavior, even in seemingly private spaces. Bedrooms, cars, and parking lots become sites shaped by surveillance, whether institutional or internalized. Fragmented imagery and shifting light echo these unstable conditions of perception, suggesting that adolescence is not only a search for refuge, but an early negotiation with systems that render us visible, legible, and therefore vulnerable.
