Artist Statement

This body of work reflects on my experience as a second generation immigrant while
navigating my Southern upbringing through the lens of a biracial white and Indo-Mauritian
woman. These paintings call to those from immigrant and diaspora backgrounds to confront the
Eurocentric standards that confine us into the “other.” By combining Eastern and Western motifs,
I question how identity is represented, lost, and preserved across generations, and how
multi-cultural identities are dismissed in the context of religious art, pop culture, and
post-colonial history. These paintings resist the white gaze imposed on marginalized
communities and the internalized ways we come to see ourselves, illuminating and mourning the
simultaneous feelings of loss and beauty that exist within the ‘in-between.’
