Artist Statement

Ejecta gives form to moments of violent impact. In a nearly instantaneous sequence, hypersonic impacts will compress, fracture, and excavate surface material, blasting it into a short-lived debris cloud or cone of ejecta. These ejecta are pushed in countless radial trajectories, which trace a volume of space and time. The works in this exhibition give mass and unexpected materiality to these moments of rupture, while disputing contemporary prerogatives of transformative violence.

I derive sculptural forms from high-speed photos used in weapons development, digital simulations used by astronomers studying crater formation, and residential building practices. Creating large sculptures from residential building materials connects them to a consequential economic reality. Tied to a sense of security and stability that a home might provide, my sculptures consider the private implications of state violence and irreversible change.
