Artist Statement
Presley Kendrick is a North Carolina-based ceramic artist currently exploring how ceramic figurines can be used as didactic tools for encoding emotion and memory. Her research into this subject stretched back to the prehistoric figurine object, following the form into its contemporary manifestations. She is particularly interested in how female and zoomorphic forms have been used to physicalize worries and preoccupations about gender, sexuality, and the environment. She finished her pieces atmospherically, typically in a wood soda firing. The relationship she creates with a kiln parallels the relationships of care and reciprocity she explores within her sculptures, extending the feelings she puts inside her pieces and pushing them back out into the environment. This solo exhibition is the culmination of three semesters worth of ceramic explorations. She wants the figures to feel capable of independent thought and movement, while also acting as vessels for the viewer to place their own memories onto.
